Why is there a picture of Kroger-brand Glucose tablets in a post about computer problems? You’ll see, as I’ve decided to mash up a bunch of short things at once rather than multiple postings.

First of all, about a year’s worth of pictures have spontaneously decided to delete themselves from my SD card. I have no idea how since said card just mostly sits inside a well-charged camera. Please don’t tell me that is not what I’m supposed to do or, better yet, deride me for being an idiot for keeping a piece of storage technology inside a device designed to use said technology. But whatever, if there’s a way to screw up I typically will find it. Is there a way to recover these images or am I just screwed?

Secondly, I had bought what I thought were glucosamine tablets for my dad (glucosamine is, as far as I can gather, “medicine for old people.”) I had been shopping all day on my feet and at that point very tired and I didn’t notice that they were glucose tablets (presumably for diabetics, even though the label didn’t explicitly state such). When I actually purchased them the cashier double-charged me for them, and the store management rectified the matter by simply letting me have them for free so, yay free glucose tablets. I come home and I’m reading the label trying to decide what to do with these and I’m like, what the heck, I pop one in my mouth and I probably should’ve come here and asked if it was safe first or at least did a Google search.

So yes, it’s one of those posts, basically the equivalent of some guy screaming at yelling at IT about why their mouse doesn’t work when they forgot to plug their mouse in.

Oh, and you get to be the IT guy in this case, have fun.

SD card: It’s not your fault; data MIGHT be recoverable. There are people who specialize in that. Maybe do a google search for “Data Recovery [town]”

Glucose: It’s pretty much just sugar. You should be fine*

Install, read instructions and run photorec:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Hopefully your pics are still on the memory, though there’s a chance the card has died.

SD/xd/mmc cards/USB drives are volatile storage. They lose power from their interal battery and they will fail.

Always backup your photos on a HDD or CD/DVD.

I can’t do it this second, but I have a license key for image recovery software that you’re welcome to have (comes with the compact flash cards for my camera). I just need to figure out where I put it, and you’re welcome to give that a shot. Being quite far away, it is somewhat difficult to lend a direct hand, but I will say that data recovery, be it image, word document or any other sort of file, is no “simple” process. You can get lucky with full or even partial recoveries where a good portion of the images are recovered successfully, but as hopeful as I want to be, since I was the lead tech for a repair shop for 5 years, I have to be level headed and truly say there are no guarantees.

But, after all that, when I get home, let me see what I have available around my desk (I know I have the key somewhere, and I certainly wont use it myself).

I’ve heard of many people attempting to use other data recovery programs. As much as I’d love to say that it’s worth a shot, you want to minimize the amount of time you make a recovery attempt, and you also really want make sure you don’t leave it in the computer any longer than it needs to be until you can verify what kind of recovery happened (partial, unsuccessful, otherwise). Somehow (and I say somehow because it was a true “fishing in the dark” moment), I managed to recover a word document for a client that was deleted for something like 6 months, and they were actively using the machine. Now, it was a partial recovery, where I was able to recover 6 full pages out of approximately 13 total (it was the rough draft beginnings of a book that may or may not see shelves in the near future), but nonetheless, it was a recovery. It took a very long time, I had to run many different programs with varying levels of success, and was overall in a position where my experience was the difference between recovering 6 pages or recovering two and a partial 3rd.

So while I don’t want to be discouraging, I just want to be honest that it’s a situation where experience is important, but having the right software is a huge help. The software I’ll give you a license key for is specifically for image recovery off memory cards. It’s always worth a shot. I’ve got your email, so when I get home tonight I’ll dig around and if I can find it, I’ll shoot you an email. I’ll also shoot you an email later with some other software suggestions to think about.
